Scott Bradley and Mary Scheerer take the Podium again!

July, 15, 2012

Scott Bradley places third overall in Men's and Mary Scheerer places third overall in the Women's race!

The 2012 WPA National Long Beach 10 Miler is in the books, and the 10 Time World Champion Jamie Mitchell is OUR champion! Jamie along with 59 other competitors entered the ocean at 11am sharp on Saturday, July 14th, 2012 in front of Long Beach’s world famous Allegria Hotel for the inaugural contest, which looks certain to become an annual NYSea Surf Week tradition in Long Beach, NY. The contest was held to benefit 4 local charities and organizations: The Dean Randazzo Cancer FoundationThe Tommy Brull Foundation and Camp Anchor, The Danny Bobis Memorial Scholarship Fund and The Long Beach High School Surf Team.

Setting a blistering pace on an overcast day with consistent 12-15 knot headwinds on the ocean leg, Jamie finished in a remarkable 1:48.04 in the 14′ class, besting local legend and world class competitor Mark Temme’s 1:55.47, with Scott Bradley finishing third at 1:58.29

In the hotly contested Prone Division, Thomas O’Neill made it back to back wins, coming in at 1:49.57 to take home wins on consecutive weekends, after scorching the competition at The Uncle Richie Farrell MS Classic in Breezy Point on July 7th. Second and third place went to Michael Connor and Justin Schwartz.

In another consecutive weekend blitz, Stephanie Shideler added yet another title to her ever growing impressive resume with a win in the Women’s division. Like Thomas, she also raced in and won her division at the Uncle Richie Farrell MS Classic. Stephanie’s time of 2:08.55 bested second and third place finishers Mary Sheerer and Donna Vedrin for the win.

J.P. Foschi took home the gold in the 12’6″ Mens Division in a remarkable 2:09.53, outpacing Taylor Jones and J.M. Kostallas in the highly competitive, packed division.

Despite the difficult wind conditions at the start, there was not a single no-show for the event, which actually started 15 minutes ahead of schedule! All but one of the place winners was able to stay for the Afterparty and awards ceremony at Pops Seafood Shack and Grill, including our Champion, Jamie Mitchell, who when asked if he’d be returning next year to defend his crown, responded in his typical modest, Aussie style, “We’ll see, Mate!”. We certainly hope so, and on behalf of our charities, we most definitely thank Jamie, all of the competitors and our sponsors for participating!
