SUP season is in full swing at Paddle Diva! Our loyal SUP enthusiasts have been visiting our Shagwong Marina headquarters in East Hampton for a variety of group stand up paddleboard lessons including SUP Yoga, adventure paddle tours and Power Up on SUP fitness classes. During the summer, I can spend six to eight hours teaching stand up paddleboard techniques and watching SUPer’s thrive, have fun and gain confidence on the water. When spending so much time outside, comfortable apparel and sun protection becomes vital.
Overexposure to UV rays leads to sunburn, accelerated skin aging and skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, one in every 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Sunblock and clothing with the Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) offers protection from ultraviolet (UV) rays. The UPF rating for apparel indicates how effectively fabrics shield the skin; the higher the UPF number, the greater degree of UV protection the clothing offers.
This season at the Paddle Diva shop we’re carrying BLOQ UV, a great line of SUP apparel that reduces sun exposure. The BLOQ UV shirts include UPF 50 to help block out harmful rays. BLOQ UV designs their products to block 98 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays and has a UPF rating of 50, which is considered excellent.
BLOQ UV is based out of Miami and is a leader in the industry for sun protective apparel. Their clothing is vibrant, fashionable, lightweight and optimal for protecting you on the water. It’s also versatile and comfortable enough to wear on the tennis courts or golf course.
Another SUP apparel product that has been popular with clients are Spirit shorts. Founder Ginger Kellar has a wonderful positive spirit herself and designed these vibrant shorts with surfing and kayaking in mind. Made with neoprene, the Spirit shorts are super comfy, functional and dry quickly on the water. They are great for SUP and appeal to women of all ages. The fabric is designed for movement but also looks very flattering — always a plus!
Each pair is reversible and comes in two colors. I love the versatility and how you can roll the shorts up or down to play with different styles. I can wear the Holly Boy short style for a morning paddle and then keep it on for an afternoon bike or SUP yoga session.
